Book: On Rue Tatin: Living and Cooking in a French Town by Susan Herrmann Loomis

Charming and delightful

Another English-speaker-falls-in-love-with-France book. And one very much  worth the reader's time. Among writers in the genre, M.F.K. Fisher is a better writer and Peter Mayle, being British, is wittier (Ms Loomis is American). Nevertheless, Ms Loomis's charming book deserves a place alongside theirs.

While Ms Fisher and Mr Mayle write mostly about living in Provence, Ms Loomis goes to Normandy, so the towns and people and food she writes about are rather different from theirs.

As with some of Ms Fisher's books, Ms Loomis includes recipes, often related to the delightful stories she tells. Most of the recipes made my mouth water even when I'd just eaten. Alas, I'm not a good enough cook even to follow them.
